Walking the Chaordic Path

Chaordic is the space that allows for “generative emergence” in collaborative, human work, as describe by Dee Hock. This generative space includes the creative tension between chaos (uncertainty, self-organization, creativity, flexibility, open process) and “order” (where there is more structure, direction, rules and use of authority).

Living systems, like organizations and communities, blend order and chaos. Both are essential, creating a creative tension that fuels engagement and innovation. This space is crucial for generative emergence, where dialogue and collaboration address complex issues and new possibilities.

In this video, Chris Corrigan, explains two key concepts for sustaining emergence in participatory leadership processes. The first is the Chaordic way, or Chaordic path, we walk as facilitators and participants in group processes. The second in the Four Fold Practice – which I’ve written about in this section of the blog as well.

Chaordic leadership is understanding context and strategically balancing order and chaos to generate creative tension. ~ Dee Hock

pause for reflection

  • What stood out to you from the teaching on chaordic path and four fold practice?
  • Where do you see opportunities to bring more ‘chaordic’ leadership into your work?
  • What leadership strengths do you use to positively introduce ‘chaos’ into collaboration? Write or share a story about a time you did this.
